IntroductionSince launching our Sustainability Policy in 2014, Arctic Panorama Lodge has pioneered a model of tourism that honours the Arctic’s fragile ecosystems and the rich traditions of the Sami people. Our achievements reflect a deep commitment to ethical practices, cultural preservation, and immersive guest experiences that prioritize respect for all life. Below is an overview of our progress.

Environmental Stewardship

  1. Renewable Energy & Efficiency:

    • Reduced total consumption by 25% via geothermal heating and smart building systems.

  2. Sustainable Adventure Activities:

    • Dog Sledding: Partnered with Sami mushers to offer traditional dog sledding tours, ensuring animal welfare standards and sharing indigenous Arctic travel practices.

    • Reindeer Visits & Sami Culture: Introduced ethical reindeer visits in collaboration with Sami herders, allowing guests to observe herds in their natural habitat without offering reindeer sledding to prevent stress to the animals.

    • Snowmobile Safaris: Operated low-emission snowmobiles on strict routes to protect sensitive habitats, with guides trained in Leave No Trace principles.

    • Sea Safaris: Boat engines produce less noise and reduce fuel consumption by 25%, focusing on marine conservation education during fjord explorations.

    • Whale safaris: We offer low-impact whale safaris designed to prioritize marine conservation and respect for Arctic ecosystems. Utilizing noise reducing boat engines and with optimized routes, we reduce fuel consumption by 25% while adhering to strict distance guidelines to avoid disturbing whales in their natural habitat. Tours are led by experienced skippers who educate guests on whale behaviour, migration patterns, and the impacts of climate change on Arctic marine life.

Social Responsibility

  1. Fair Labor Practices:

    • All employees are employed in a 100% position and receive a salary above the collective agreement salary and annual training.

    • Introduced mental health support programs, with 90% employee satisfaction.

  1. Sami Cultural Partnerships:

    • Collaborated with Sami communities to design cultural experiences, including:

      • Guided reindeer visits led by Sami herders, sharing stories of their ancestral bond with the animals.

      • Sourced 100% of ingredients from Sami reindeer herders and local Arctic fishermen, promoting fair-trade partnerships.

      • Hosted 100+ storytelling evenings per year educating guests on reindeer husbandry, spirituality, and Arctic survival wisdom.

Economic Sustainability

  1. Local Empowerment:

    • Generated more than 500,000 NOK annually for Sami-owned businesses through tours, crafts, and procurement.

    • Created  jobs for Sami community members in guiding, hospitality, and cultural programming.

  2. Ethical Tourism Practices:

    • Enforced a no-reindeer-sledding policy to align with Sami ethical standards and animal welfare science.

    • Limited sea safari groups to 12 guests to minimize noise and disturbance to marine life.

Guest Engagement & Education

  • 65% of guests participated in Sami and Arctic cultural activities, including:

    • Reindeer feeding sessions with herders, learning about sustainable herding practices.

    • Sami-led nature walks explaining traditional uses of Arctic plants and reindeer materials.

    • Sea Safaris and Fjord Cruises with the Arctic wildlife and history in mind.

Certifications & Recognition

  • Awarded Green Key Norway Certification (2020) for leadership in sustainability and cultural ethics.

Future Commitments

  1. Expand Sami-led reindeer experiences to include seasonal migration storytelling tours by 2026.

  2. Generating at least 30% of energy consumption by solar panels by 2028.

ConclusionArctic Panorama Lodge stands as a bridge between modern travellers and ancient Arctic traditions. By prioritizing the well-being of local wildlife, huskies and reindeers, celebrating Sami culture, and offering adventures rooted in respect, we prove that tourism can be a force for preservation. Together with our Sami partners, we invite guests to experience the Arctic’s magic responsibly leaving footprints of curiosity, not exploitation.
